As our community continues its recovery and rebuilding efforts, the Plumas Housing Council is dedicated to keeping Plumas County citizens informed about critical housing developments. During our recent May meeting, community leaders, county officials, and housing advocates gathered to discuss upcoming transitions, available resources, and major project milestones that will shape the future of Plumas housing. Here is what you need to know.
Supportive Transitions for RV Residents
A pressing update for many residents is the impending expiration of the emergency county ordinance on June 30th. This emergency measure previously allowed survivors of the Dixie and Beckwourth Fires to live in RVs and travel trailers as temporary dwellings.
County officials stress that their primary goal during this transition is providing support, not punitive action. The focus of local Code Enforcement and Planning departments is to guide residents through due process and help community members come into compliance by finding permanent housing solutions.
Resources Available for Plumas County Citizens
If you or someone you know is impacted by the sunsetting ordinance, there are active resources available:
- Financial Support: Plumas Rural Services (PRS) still has disaster recovery funds available through their Special Needs Committee to assist eligible Dixie Fire survivors during this transition.
- Private Rental List: The Council is actively compiling a localized list of private landlords with available rentals. If you are a property owner with a rental available, or a citizen in need of a rental, please reach out so we can help bridge the gap.
- Future Housing Prioritization: Those displaced by the fires will be the primary target market for upcoming housing developments as spaces become available in the fall.
A Major Milestone for “Built for Plumas”
We are thrilled to share incredibly positive news regarding the “Built for Plumas” initiative! Thanks to the persistent efforts of the Plumas Housing Council and the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), Phase One (environmental review) is officially complete and approved.
The Notice of Intent for funding is currently being issued to the federal government. Following a mandatory public comment period, Phase Two will officially commence, bringing us one massive step closer to breaking ground on permanent, sustainable housing for fire survivors.
Expanding Student Housing
Housing availability impacts every sector of our community. Feather River College (FRC) is actively exploring the expansion of student housing, aiming to add over 40 high-density units at the Meadows property while continuing to evaluate on-campus building options. Expanding student housing is a vital step that will ultimately free up other rentals in the broader Plumas housing market.
